Good Gumnuts Festival grows from 300 to 3,000 attendees in five years

Organisers of the Good Gumnuts Festival are putting the finishing touches on their biggest event to date, with up to 3,000 music lovers to descend on Tasmania’s north-west coast this weekend.

Festival co-director Harry Badcock said the three-day event kicks off tomorrow in Burnie with a sold-out pre-party, followed by the main festival on Saturday and Sunday.

The festival has grown significantly since its humble beginnings five years ago with just 300 people.

Artists this year including Kim Churchill, Art vs Science, Dope Lemon, The Jungle Giants and Sneaky Sound System.

“This is the biggest one definitely,” he said.

“We’ve bought the biggest stage that we’ve ever had.”

Badcock said Kim Churchill holds special significance for the festival.

“He’s a good friend of Good Gumnuts,” he said.

“He played our very first one when it was about 300 capacity five years ago.”

The event is run entirely after hours by Badcock and his wife Charlotte Grey, who both maintain full-time jobs while organising the year-long project.

“We both love music and we’ve really curated this to be a family-friendly festival,” Badcock said.

“We’re bringing something to the north west coast as well.”

“We thought, hey, let’s give it a crack and this is where we are,.”

About 100 tickets remain available for Saturday and Sunday, with the Friday pre-party completely sold out.
