The Tasmanian Government is stepping up pressure on GFG Alliance amid growing concerns for workers at the Liberty Bell Bay smelter and the broader George Town community.

Business Minister Felix Ellis met with GFG representatives on Friday to outline the government’s expectations following mounting anxiety about the future of the operation.

“Tasmania and Tasmanians have been good to Liberty Bell Bay for many years and that same respect is no longer being shown by GFG,” Ellis said.

The government convened the Bell Bay Response Team for a second time on Thursday as uncertainty continues to build ahead of the Christmas period.

Community feedback indicates GFG’s actions are having widening impacts beyond just the immediate workforce.

“We continue to receive feedback from local businesses and community representatives about the growing impacts of GFG’s actions,” Ellis said.

The minister has urged the company to provide certainty to employees who face an uncertain festive season.

“As we head into Christmas, staff at Liberty are understandably anxious about their future.”

“GFG could provide the reassurance they need today by stepping up and backing the Bell Bay workforce.”

The government has already begun exploring legal options through its financial arrangements with the company.

“The Government has already reserved its rights under the State loan agreement and we are now carefully working through all available options,” Ellis confirmed.

Liberty Bell Bay was purchased by GFG Alliance, led by Sanjeev Gupta, in 2021.
