The Greens say they are hearing from Labor MPs and candidates who privately oppose the party’s backing of a new stadium at Macquarie Point.

Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff said Labor figures have been reaching out to share their concerns about leader Dean Winter’s stance on the project.

“[The] Labor Party don’t usually talk to the Greens about matters like this. It’s a sign of the deep disunity within Labor on Dean Winter’s stadium position,” Woodruff said.

“It obviously is out of step with the majority of Tasmanians and we know that there are people who are standing for election for Labor who want a different position.”

Labor’s position on the now $945 million project has shifted since the last state election, when former leader Rebecca White campaigned on a ‘no stadium’ platform.

Woodruff said those speaking out believe the stadium is unpopular and know many in the community feel the same.

“These are some of the people that have been campaigning hard only at an election a year ago to stop the stadium,” she said.

“People who had ‘no stadium’ bumper stickers on their cars.”

Woodruff said voting for the Greens is the only way to “stop the stadium”.

Labor leader Dean Winter said his party has a united position on the stadium.

“Tasmania Labor’s position is supporting a stadium and supporting our team,” he said.

“That’s all our candidates’ position.”
