The Greens say nearly 200 northern Tasmanians turned out to their latest anti-stadium meeting in Launceston yesterday.
The community forum was held ahead of the state election to give locals a chance to voice their opposition to the proposed $945 million stadium at Macquarie Point in Hobart.
Greens candidate Cecily Rosol said the “bumper crowd” reflected frustration with both major parties over their support for the project.
“People in the north are outraged,” she said. “Why should they pay for a billion-dollar stadium in Hobart?”

“It’s a slap in the face, especially when our health services are crying out for funding and people can’t find an affordable home.”
Rosol said many attendees were particularly angry about the government’s push to rush through planning approvals.

“The community was incensed that the Liberals want to fast-track the stadium planning approval by pushing legislation through parliament,” she said.
Labor didn’t escape scrutiny either, with several locals expressing frustration over its changed position on the stadium.
“The Greens have been the strongest voice against the stadium since day one,” Rosol said.
“We’ll continue to fight to stop the Hobart stadium and invest in affordable housing and a health system that works.”
