Tasmanian Deputy Premier Guy Barnett has once again joined forces with Diabetes Australia to encourage locals to get behind the upcoming Pollie Pedal bike ride.
The event, which will take place across the state over three days from February 28th to March 2nd, aims to raise awareness and funds for diabetes research and support programs.
Barnett, who has type 1 diabetes, has been an ambassador for Diabetes Australia for over two decades and is passionate about supporting people with the condition.
“We just want to get out there on the Diabetes Pollie Pedal,” he said.
“Raising awareness and fundraising for diabetes and people with diabetes in Tassie is exactly what we’re on about.”
The ride will launch at Barnett’s former school, the Hagley Farm School.
Barnett said healthy, active lifestyles are incredibly important for people with diabetes, particularly children.
“For kids with type 1 diabetes … we want to live healthy, active lifestyles as well,” he said.
According to Diabetes Australia Tasmania General Manager Minke Hoekstra, the event showcases the “strength and resilience” of the diabetes community.
“It not only raises vital funds for research and support programs, but it shows that diabetes doesn’t define us,” she said.
“Diabetes often can be a real motivator to overcome obstacles and to keep moving forward.”
The event is open to people of all ages and fitness levels.
