‘Hammer man’ charged after “deliberate act of vandalism”

7am, Tuesday 31 October: Police have charged a 28-year-old Newnham man after he allegedly smashed several windows of a Launceston business with a hammer yesterday.

Police allege the attack was a “deliberate act of vandalism” and say several staff members were present inside the building, which was open for business at the time.

They estimate the damage caused to be “in the vicinity of $80,000” and believe the incident was an isolated one.

The man involved was known to staff and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in December.
