Updated 3:30pm, Friday October 31: Police say a Claremont man has been arrested following a “targeted operation” in Launceston this afternoon.

The 37-year-old was taken into custody in Mayfield a short time ago.

“He is assisting police with their inquiries,” a spokesperson said.

“There was no threat to the wider community. Police would like to thank members of the public for their understanding during the operation.”

Earlier: Police are searching parts of Launceston this afternoon for a “person of interest”, with locals reporting a strong police presence across several locations.

The operation has involved both ground units and a helicopter, which was deployed briefly earlier in the day.

“Members of the public may have noticed an increased police presence in some areas, however there is currently no threat to the wider community,” police said in a statement.

Officers have not released details about the nature of the search.

Multiple police vehicles were earlier spotted around Devon Hills and near the Bunnings Warehouse precinct in Kings Meadows, off the Midland Highway.

The helicopter was also seen circling over Cressy before heading north along Cressy Road, through Longford to Illawarra Road and onto the Bass Highway.

“Police would like to thank the community for their understanding,” the spokesperson said.
