The Huon Valley’s largest grassroots mental health event returns this Sunday, bringing the community together for the annual Hilltop Hike.
Founded in 2022 following the tragic loss of two young lives, the event has now raised more than $150,000 for local mental health initiatives and suicide prevention programs.
Already, this year’s fundraising efforts have raised over $57,000, with proceeds supporting the Huon Valley PCYC After-School Drop-In Program.
“PCYC showed us what is possible when the community comes together,” committee member Jorinde Tenten said.

“We can build on that momentum and make this something
young people in the Huon Valley can rely on for years to come.”
The program operates twice weekly, providing a free safe space for young people aged 6-18 and offers connection opportunities, trusted adult mentors and activities, with some children receiving their first proper meal of the day.

“Funds raised this year will help not only continue the program, but strengthen and expand it to meet growing demand,” Tenten said.
Participants can walk or run the three-kilometre route up Scenic Hill starting at 10am from the Huon Valley PCYC in Huonville.
Those preferring not to hike can join community activities back at the PCYC.
The free event requires no registration and welcomes all community members.

“Because every step matters. And every dollar raised helps someone in our Valley feel less alone,” organisers said.
The community’s efforts will culminate at the Hilltop Hike Gala on 14 March at Wrest Point Hotel, where supporters, partners and volunteers will celebrate the funds raised and their impact on young people.
The Rotary Club of the Huon Valley organises the event alongside Harcourts Huon Valley and Rural Alive and Well.
