One of Launceston’s most iconic dining spots is set to reopen later this year after a major restoration.

The City of Launceston is investing $300,000 in renewal works at the Gorge Restaurant in Cataract Gorge, targeting the building’s footings, structural elements, internal layout and interiors.

The building dates back to 1898, when it was first built as tearooms replacing earlier refreshment tents on the site.

It has served as a dining destination for more than 125 years.

Councillors voted at their February meeting to lease the restaurant’s operation to Gunn and Parkinson, who already run the Basin Cafe nearby.

The handover will happen once building works reach practical completion, expected before the end of this financial year.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the project reflected the council’s commitment to protecting Launceston’s key attractions.

“Cataract Gorge is one of those places that really defines Launceston,” he said.

“It brings together nature, history and hospitality in a way that’s pretty special.”

Garwood said renewing the building protected an important part of the city’s story while supporting local business and tourism.

He said the project also backed Launceston’s status as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.

“I’m looking forward to seeing locals and visitors enjoying great food and those views again in a refreshed space before long,” he said.

The works focus on improving the building’s condition, safety and usability to ensure it remains fit for purpose for future generations.

The restaurant is expected to reopen to the public later in 2026.
