The historic Tasmanian ship Cartela, built in 1912, the same year as the Titanic, has been successfully refloated this morning.

It comes after the vessel took on water at its berth on the Huon River last month.

Three cranes were used to hold the ship upright during the operation, which was carried out by Hurricane Marine and Elliots Cranes.

The Cartela is set to undergo a long-awaited restoration project at Hunter’s Slipyard in Battery Point, with work expected to take two years.

According to the application presented to councillors on last month, the vessel must be hauled up and out of the River Derwent before repairs can begin.

The restoration project has received overwhelming support from locals, with four submissions in favour and only one in opposition.

“As a nearby resident of the Slipway I sincerely welcome the prospect of seeing work begin on the historic vessel Cartela,” one local said.
