In a bittersweet moment for many Tasmanians, the iconic TVT-6 ‘TasTV’ building in New Town has been knocked down to make way for a new hospital.

For those who grew up watching the original station – which is now WIN Television – and those who worked within its walls, the demolition marks the end of an era.

The building, which has been a prominent landmark in the area for decades, was built in the 1950s and was home to TVT-6 until it was sold to WIN Television in the early 1990s.

During its heyday, the station was a hub of activity, producing and broadcasting a range of popular local shows and news programs to Tasmanian audiences.

Hundreds of Tasmanians have taken to social media to express their sadness at the news of its demolition, with many sharing personal anecdotes and stories.

“Goodbye TVT Channel 6. Memories of Tom Payne, Elizabeth Godfrey, Koko the Clown and many more passing through these doors on live TV in glorious black and white until the test pattern each night,” wrote one Tasmanian.

Another shared their childhood memories of growing up near the station.

“We lived behind TVT6, at 16 Clare Street & watched it being built. Used to see all the TV personalities arriving for work & leaving,” they wrote.

For some, the station held a more personal connection.

“My very first babysitter was the secretary at reception at TVT6. 6 weeks old and slept in the sound booth with the mic on in case I cried. This place was a huge part of my childhood,” shared one Tasmanian.

The new Nexus private hospital at the 48-52 New Town Road location will employ over 130 staff and will contain 6 operating theaters and a 24-bed overnight ward.
