AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles made the official announcement at the North Hobart oval moments ago.

The new ‘truly Tasmanian team’ will play games in the South, North and the North-West – including at the future Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart.

McLachlan said the AFL commission resolved to award the 19th licence ‘based on conditions’, this morning signing ‘binding agreements’ with the Tasmanian Government that committed to delivering on those conditions – including partnering on the construction of a stadium at Macquarie Point.

The AFL men’s team is expected to enter the competition in 2028, while a proposed timeline for the women’s team is still to be worked through.
