Smoke from multiple bushfires on Tasmania’s West Coast has spread across the state, blanketing Hobart and other regions.
While southern Tasmanian communities face no immediate threat, authorities have issued a number of smoke alerts and recommended preventive measures.
The fires are currently burning near the main West Coast population centres of Queenstown, Zeehan and Rosebery.
Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch has reminded Tasmanians everywhere to remain aware of smoke from the bushfires.

“Keeping safe from fire danger is always the highest priority, so make sure to follow emergency advice,” he said when the fires began.
“If you’re likely to be in smoky conditions for more than a day or two, consider if you can safely temporarily relocate to a place unaffected by smoke.”

“This is particularly important for those at higher risk from smoke.”
High-risk individuals include older people, infants and young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and those with underlying medical conditions.
Health authorities recommend several key protective measures, with the primary advice being to stay indoors with doors and windows closed.
They also advise setting air conditioners to recirculate indoor air to minimise smoke exposure.
