Growing up in California, Sam Chang was raised on big American breakfasts and burgers made from scratch.
Now he is bringing those flavours to Glenorchy, with Hobart burger joint The Standard opening its first venue outside the city this weekend.
The Main Road diner opens on Saturday, serving a full breakfast menu alongside its usual line-up of smashed beef burgers, southern fried chicken and thickshakes.
It is the first time The Standard has expanded beyond the CBD since opening in a hole-in-the-wall venue down a Hobart laneway in 2014.

Chang, who owns the business with Christian Ryan and Will Priestley, said the new menu was inspired by the food he grew up eating.
“The menu for the new Glenorchy venue draws heavily upon my memories of the breakfasts and burgers I grew up on – honest, simple food made with heart,” he said.

“We’re still focusing on our burgers, but we’re excited to be opening up a whole new part of the day by bringing a fresh breakfast menu to the northern suburbs.”
The team makes its bread and burger buns fresh each day, along with house-made pickles and sauces.
Co-owner and chef Christian Ryan said the move was about bringing the business closer to more customers.
“We’ve always believed that great food should be accessible – not just geographically, but in the way that it makes people feel,” he said.

“We can’t wait to bring our iconic burgers, warm welcome and fun energy to a new neighbourhood and to create a space that the community can come back to again and again.”
The Standard Glenorchy will open at 449 Main Road on Saturday.
It will trade from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 9pm on weekends.
