Hobart City Hall has been transformed into a makeshift sail repair workshop to mend the sail of an around-the-world yachtie.

French skipper Thomas Coville docked in Hobart with his trimaran, Sodebo Ultim, yesterday during the Arkéa Ultim Challenge, with damage to his bow pulpit and the port-side net.

The City of Hobart shared images of City Hall’s floor, completely covered with the sail from the yacht on Thursday afternoon, as local sailmakers worked on the mammoth sails.

“Due to its size and proximity to the waterfront, City Hall was the perfect venue for this occasion for 42 South Marine/North Sails Tasmania,” the council said.

Coville is required to spent at least 24 hours in the capital due to race rules, with the decision working in his favour and allowing the team to steer clear of severe weather between Tasmania and New Zealand.

But organisers say it “seems very unlikely” that Coville will depart from Hobart before Sunday with the “big storm passing through”.
