A man was so intoxicated he could not physically blow into a breathalyser when police pulled him over in Hobart’s north on Sunday night, Tasmania Police say.
The 25-year-old was intercepted in New Town around 10:30pm after officers saw him driving “erratically” through several streets with his headlights off.
Police allege the driver was unable to comply with repeated requests to undergo breath analysis and was instead required to provide a blood sample.
He has been charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and was bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.
Acting Sergeant Tom Andrews said officers were alarmed by the driver’s state.
“Police were extremely concerned at the level of intoxication and inability of the driver to follow simple requests after he had chosen to drive,” Andrews said.
“This is a clear example of someone making a conscious yet highly dangerous decision that could have had devastating consequences with a complete disregard for the safety of others.”
“Our message is simple – if you drink or use drugs, don’t drive.”
