Hobart drivers will regain access to Queens Walk earlier than expected, with TasWater announcing the road will reopen before Easter, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.
The stretch of road, originally set to reopen in early May, is part of a major sewerage pipeline project that’s been progressing faster than planned.
TasWater’s Head of Major Projects Tim Cubit said the early reopening would come as good news for local commuters.
The Queens Walk works form part of a larger 4.3-kilometre pipeline installation connecting the new Macquarie Point Sewage Pump Station to the upgraded Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant.
While this section has been running smoothly, TasWater has hit some unexpected hurdles elsewhere in the project.
“We had planned on crossing the Domain Highway during the closure of Queens Walk, but we encountered unexpected and complex ground conditions which will require some adjustments to our construction approach,” Cubit said.
“We will now complete this work later in the year, during off-peak times to minimise disruptions.”
Despite the change in plans, Cubit confirmed the wider pipeline project is still on track.
“The adjustment in our construction method will not affect the overall project timeline,” he said.
