Tasmania’s funeral industry is about to get a whole lot greener with the opening of the state’s first ever water cremation facility.

Alluvium Water Cremations will use a process known as alkaline hydrolysis to break down human remains using only water, a gentle flow, temperature and alkalinity.

The result is pure white bone ash that can be respectfully returned to loved ones, similar to traditional flame-based cremation.

The Mornington business recently shipped in their special water cremation unit from the United States and have already received widespread interest.

“We are thrilled to introduce water cremation to Australia as a compassionate and sustainable option for families during their time of loss,” co-director Luke Cripps said.

“Our mission is to provide a dignified and environmentally responsible alternative to traditional cremation, aligning with the values of those seeking eco-conscious end-of-life solutions.”

The facility uses cutting-edge technology and adheres to strict environmental standards, consuming significantly less energy and eliminating harmful emissions compared to flame-based cremation.

“We believe that every individual deserves a final farewell that respects both their legacy and the planet,” co-director Brendan Cooper said.
