An Independent Clark MP has purchased a share in a Hobart hotel to prevent its closure.

Kristie Johnston has joined co-owners Ester and Justin Devine in purchasing the Maypole Hotel and sees being a small business owner as a way to better understand and represent her community.

“I’m very excited to share the news that I’m now a part-owner of the wonderful Maypole Hotel,” Johnston wrote online.

“For many years I have been a strong advocate for pokie-free, family-friendly establishments that mean so much to local communities.”

The Devines, who had owned the hotel for 10 years, were ready to close the historic local due to COVID-19 challenges and the development of a nearby Dan Murphy’s store before Johnston stepped in to save it.

“With the venue destined for closure, I saw an opportunity to put my money where my mouth is and save ‘my local’,” Johnson said.

“Don’t worry, I’ll still be strongly serving you as your Independent MP, but also serving you behind the bar.”

The news has delighted many New Town locals, thankful their “favourite pub” and “new local” has been saved.
