Two dozen Hobart motorists who couldn’t resist checking their phones have been caught red-handed during a targeted police sting this morning.

Police pulled over the distracted drivers during peak hour in central Hobart, handing out 24 fines for mobile phone use alone.

The operation also caught three drivers blocking clearways, one unregistered vehicle and one unlicensed driver.

Inspector Penny Reardon said officers were disappointed so many motorists were still putting lives at risk.

She said similar operations would continue across the city.

“Using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous and illegal and people face a $410 fine and three demerit points if detected by police,” she said.

“We will keep targeting dangerous driving behaviours to ensure motorists comply with the law and prioritise safety.”

Inspector Reardon urged all drivers to stay focused behind the wheel.

“If you’re on the roads, follow the rules and avoid distractions behind the wheel,” she said.
