Workers at a popular Hobart pub have been left scratching their heads after a bizarre incident which has left the venue’s beer garden left looking a little less green.

New Sydney Hotel owner Ashan Rodrigo said staff arrived at the Bathurst Street venue on Wednesday morning to find their beloved large elderflower tree had been mysteriously turned to mulch.

“We pride our beer garden of being an actual garden and this tree provided a lot of shade during summer and winter,” he told Pulse.

“[Now] there’s nothing of it left.”

After-hours security footage captured three people, believed to be aged in their 30s or 40s, wearing high-vis gear and helmets as they entered the beer garden with power tools.

“Maybe they got the wrong place, or maybe someone from the adjoining building asked them to cut it down, because these guys were like professional tree cutters,” he said.

“[It is] very bizarre.”

He says his team is working on providing a “shady alternative” as soon as possible, encouraging anyone with information on the unusual incident to contact the pub.

“We just don’t want it to negatively affect all the locals who call our pub their second home,” he said.
