Hobart has been ranked as the third city with the cleanest air in the world, according to a new analysis of air pollution levels in nearly 400 cities globally.
The Tasmanian capital is one of three Australian capitals to have made it into the top 10 for having the purest air, with Darwin measuring fourth and Canberra 10th.
In contrast, Sydney came in at 150th, ranking as the most polluted Australian city and faring worse than London at 90th.
The top spot was taken out by the Pacific nation of Funafuti in Tuvalu, followed by Manaus, Brazil.
The rankings were based on an ‘air quality index’ score that took into account concentrations of hazardous air particles, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone and nitrogen dioxide.
Online vehicle trading site Auto Trader analysed and collected the data from Open Weather Map twice a year over a three year period.
According to the report, Hobart and Darwin’s high ranking came down to proximity to the ocean, small populations and less traffic.
Places like Bilbao in Spain achieved lower pollution through public transport use and making vehicle fleets to electric.
