The City of Hobart wants locals to team up with their neighbours and host free outdoor street parties this winter.

The My Street program encourages residents to organise intimate gatherings on their own streets, with council providing support ranging from entertainment and food to road closures and event staff.

Expressions of interest are open now and close on March 31.

Anyone in the Hobart municipality can apply, but they’ll need to rope in at least three neighbours to form an organising group before submitting.

Events can be as simple as a letterbox drop inviting neighbours to bring a rug, a chair and a plate of food to a local park.

Or they can go bigger – blocking off a street for live entertainment, talent shows, open-air cinema or games.

The council said it would organise artists, performers, food and furniture in collaboration with residents and handle logistics including park bookings, permits, traffic management, cleaning and event staff.

Numbers will be capped and invitations limited to locals to keep things community-focused.

Each event is designed to bring together residents from one or two streets to meet new people and celebrate local life during the cooler months.

The program ran last year, with street parties held in West Hobart and New Town in June 2025 featuring barbecues, hula hoops and live performances.

Organising groups will work with the council’s events team to plan their gathering and act as the point of contact for neighbours before and on the day.

Guidelines are available on the City of Hobart website.
