Vandals has been wreaking havoc on a social housing development in Hobart’s Herdsmans Cove, with the 40-unit project now suffering delays and $100,000 worth of damage.
The Centacare Evolve housing project has suffered from repeated broken windows and even arson attacks, causing major headaches for those in need of social housing.
According to CEO of Centacare Evolve Ben Wilson the vandalism is ‘very disappointing’, with damages ranging from $40,000 to $50,000 sometimes caused in just one night.
The relentless attacks have caused significant delays in completing the project, pushing the timeline back by around 2 months.
”We would have some of the sites ready by the end of June,” Wilson said.
“[But] because of the vandalism we’ve had on site that’s going to see that pushed out at least 8 to 10 weeks, if not even more.”
Wilson revealed that they have been working closely with police, who suspect a group of youths behind the damage spree.
“Unfortunately, to date, there hasn’t been any prosecution or anything done in that space.”
Police investigations are underway and anyone with information is asked to come forward to assist in their inquiries.
