Planning for the construction of three new ferry terminals across Hobart will begin within 100 days of the Liberals being re-elected, the party has revealed.
Jeremy Rockliff says ferries will be operating to Lindisfarne, Wilkinsons Point and Sandy Bay within four years.
“Our Government brought ferries back to the Derwent with the Bellerive service and it’s been a raging success with more than 120,000 trips in 12 months,” Rockliff said.
“The ferry expansion is tipped to take around 1,650 cars off the road in peak hours. This will go a long to saving time for families doing school drop-off and CBD workers caught in the rat-race on the Brooker Highway, Tasman Bridge and Sandy Bay Road.”
The state government unveiled the draft River Derwent Ferry Service Masterplan in late 2023, outlining proposed new ferry terminals at Lindisfarne, Wilkinsons Point and Sandy Bay – as well as Howrah, Regatta Point and Kingston Beach.
Liberal Minister Michael Ferguson said the other priority terminal locations along the Derwent River would be completed under a future expansion.
“Construction of the new facilities will also deliver a major boost to the Tasmanian economy, creating more than 100 jobs as well as ongoing operational roles,” he said.
