Tasmania will get its first taste of international ice hockey when the Canada vs USA Ice Hockey Classic hits Hobart in July.
MyState Bank Arena will be transformed into a purpose-built ice rink for two games on July 3 and 4, with Hobart officially opening the 2026 Australian series.
The annual event pits two of hockey’s greatest rivals against each other, featuring more than 30 elite players from North America.
Team USA will be captained by NHL veteran David Booth, while Canada will be led by former Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks defenceman Simon Després, a former first-round NHL draft pick.

Ice Hockey Classic director Kerry Goulet said bringing the series to Tasmania was a milestone for the sport in Australia.
“To open our 2026 series in Hobart and bring international ice hockey to Tasmania for the first time is incredibly exciting,” he said.

“Transforming MyState Bank Arena into a hockey venue will deliver a truly unique experience for fans.”
MyState Bank Arena general manager Renee Brown said the event was a major coup for the venue and the state.
“To welcome international ice hockey to Hobart for the first time and transform our arena into a world-class ice rink is something we’re incredibly proud to be part of,” she said.
“It’s going to be a spectacular experience for fans and a landmark event for the state.”

The Ice Hockey Classic has previously drawn packed crowds at venues including Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena.
The series is known for delivering a high-energy, North American-style game-day atmosphere, with fast-paced action and big hits.
Full team lineups will be announced closer to the event, with tickets to go on sale in the coming days.
