Hobart has been revealed as the booziest capital city in Australia, with over 30% of people in the greater Hobart area exceeding recommended alcohol guidelines.
According to a recent report by iSelect, based on 2022 Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Hobart (30.5%) ranks above Perth (30.2%) and Brisbane (28.7%) in terms of excessive drinking.
iSelect said this represents three in ten residents surpassing the guidelines in greater Hobart.
In the Northern Territory, the rate of people drinking beyond recommended limits is 40.9% and the highest figure in the country.
The national guidelines recommend drinking no more than 10 standard drinks a week or more than four drinks a day.
While greater Hobart leads the capital cities, Tasmania as a whole ranks fifth nationally, with 27.9% of Tasmanians exceeding the guidelines.
“When looking deeper at demographics [nationally], men are twice as likely as women to exceed the guidelines – 35.8% of men compared to 18.1% of women go over the limit,” iSelect said.
“And despite successive government attempts to curb young adults drinking, gen Z has the most people drinking more than recommended, with over a third (36.1%) doing so.”
