A new Transit Lane Connector at the base of Hobart’s Southern Outlet is now fully operational, easing congestion between Davey and Macquarie streets.
Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent said the development is part of the broader Southern Projects program aimed at improving traffic flow in Tasmania’s capital.
“Road users travelling into the CBD from the Southern Outlet will have a safer, smoother experience as the new lane eases the bottleneck between Davey and Macquarie streets,” Vincent said.
Initially, the connector will be available to all vehicles, but will eventually be restricted to transit use once the Southern Outlet Transit Lane project is completed.

The dedicated lane will eventually serve buses, taxis, motorbikes, emergency vehicles and private cars carrying three or more passengers.
The next phase involves securing a 400-metre rockface near the Olinda Grove ramp before construction of the main transit lane can begin.

“The rockface protection works are expected to start later this year and must be completed before construction starts on the transit lane,” Vincent said.
The connector links to the Macquarie Street clearway that was completed in April last year, creating a more integrated traffic management system.
While the connector is now operational, landscaping and minor finishing works will continue at the site until May.
