A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for parts of southern and eastern Tasmania, including Hobart.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warning covers South East, Upper Derwent Valley and East Coast areas, with localised gusts averaging 60-70km/h and exceeding 100km/h possible from late morning.
“A series of embedded troughs within a strong westerly flow will bring strong and gusty winds across southern and eastern Tasmania today,” the BOM said.
“Winds are expected to ease by early evening.”
Mainland Tasmania’s highest wind gust so far this morning was recorded at kunanyi/Mt Wellington at 107km/h around 4am.
A gust of 83km/h was also measured at Low Rocky Point.
The State Emergency Service (SES) is advising residents to supervise children closely, check on family and neighbours and manage pets and livestock.
They are also urging people to secure outdoor items like furniture and play equipment, be prepared for power outages and beware of damaged trees and power lines.
