Macquarie Street Foodstore, a cafe owned by Hobart councillor Mike Dutta, will be shutting down ‘for good’ by the end of the month.

The ‘surprise closure’ is reportedly linked to a rent increase, with the cafe expressing gratitude to its loyal customers for their unwavering support throughout the years.

“Dear Valued Customers, It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of FOODSTORE CAFE permanently,” the cafe said in a Facebook post.

“You have kept us going, and we couldn’t have done it without you.”

“We will forever treasure and cherish those beautiful memories.”

The cafe’s last day of operation will be Saturday 27 May, leaving loyal customers heartbroken.

“Our memories will live on,” said the post, ending with “MANY MANY THANKS FOODSTORE STAFF.”
