After months of sitting idle, Hobart’s new variable traffic message signs have sprung to life, displaying live travel times to key destinations.
The digital signs, which cost taxpayers about $1.7 million each, were installed in 2024 but have remained blank until now.
The Department of State Growth has confirmed that all signs are now successfully connected to the traffic network and are in the final stages of testing.
“You might see the messages, colours and formats of the signs change as we continue testing,” the department said.

“Some signs may occasionally switch on or off. This is part of the process.”
“Our final stage of testing will make sure the signs are connected properly to our traffic management centre so they can display real-time travel info, alerts about crashes and safety reminders.”

The testing phase is expected to wrap up by the end of April.
