Police have seized a homemade firearm and illicit tobacco products from a fortified home on Hobart’s eastern shore.
Officers from Bellerive, supported by specialist units and dog handlers, executed a search warrant at the Rokeby property on Thursday.
Despite attempts by the occupants to barricade the premises, police forced entry.
Once inside, officers allegedly located an unsecured homemade firearm, additional gun parts, ammunition and illegal tobacco.
A 26-year-old man and a 37-year-old man were arrested at the scene.
Both have since been charged with offences including possessing a firearm without a licence, dealing in firearms without a dealer’s licence, selling tobacco without a licence and constructing fortifications on premises.
The pair were remained in custody overnight and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday morning.
Acting Inspector Eloise Penney warned of the dangers posed by illegal weapons and “the additional dangers” in handling homemade firearms.
“Tasmania Police is committed to removing illegal firearms from the community and urges anyone with information about firearm activity to come forward,” she said.
