Homes Tasmania has confirmed it will be reviewing the design of its housing project earmarked for Penguin’s old football oval.

The housing authority released its original plans for the Ironcliffe Road site earlier this year, proposing to create 50 lots with potential for a combination of one to two-storey homes and multi-storey unit blocks.

Local community members were quick to form a group to push back against the idea, leading Homes Tasmania to say it is now reviewing the design after “extensive community consultation”.

“We are committed to delivering land where people can build homes to meet a range of needs, including those wanting to downsize from larger family homes or people wanting to buy their first home,” a spokesperson said.

The housing authority intends to consult on a revised design in the new year.

A petition against the development attracted more than 1,100 signatures and hundreds attended a Homes Tasmania information session in late July.

According to the Homes Tasmania website, the former Penguin Recreation Ground “presents a significant opportunity to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the community”.

The land was transferred to Homes Tasmania from Parks and Wildlife at the end of July and will need to first be rezoned before any work can get underway.
