Speed limits along a stretch of the Huon Highway south of Geeveston are set to change, with authorities implementing adjustments they say will enhance road safety.

The Department of State Growth has approved the modifications following requests from local community members and assessments of the highway’s infrastructure.

The existing 100km/h speed limit on a 4.4-kilometre section between Waterloo and south of Geeveston will be reduced to 80km/h.

The same adjustment will be made to a 900-metre section through Raminea, where the current 100km/h limit will be lowered to 80km/h.

The 80km/h speed limit along a 2.3-kilometre section through Glendevie will also be reduced to 70km/h.

According to the Department, the adjustments are necessary due to a combination of factors, including narrow and winding road characteristics, poor sight distances and the number of driveways.

“The new speed limits will improve safety for all road users by reducing the risk of crashes and providing extra time to react to vehicles entering or exiting the Huon Highway,” a spokesperson said.

“Research shows that even small reductions in operating speeds can result in considerable safety benefits.”

“Each speed limit change will have a minimal impact on travel times, adding a further 40 seconds between Waterloo and Geeveston, 8 seconds through Raminea, and 15 seconds through Glendevie.”

All of the new speed limits will come into effect once new signage has been installed, which is expected to be completed from October 14.
