Huon Valley residents will be able to take a dip in their newly renovated local pool from this weekend.
The upgraded Port Huon Pool will officially reopen on Saturday at 8am after being closed for more than a year for extensive renovations.
Re-lining works began in August 2023 and were completed within about three months, but subsequent ventilation and heating issues delayed the reopening until now.
Council CEO Lachlan Kranz, who stepped into the role in January 2024, said there were plenty of lessons to take away from the project.
“There’s been bumps, obviously, on that project and delays and variations in any construction project aren’t uncommon. This one has had its fair share,” he said at a council meeting last month.
“The biggest lesson is to keep your assets maintained, always, so they never reached the point of degradation that this one had.”
“If we are owning an asset we need to value it, we need to utilise it, we need to keep it keep it maintained appropriately and that is the big underscoring lesson.”
Mayor Sally Doyle said free entry will be on offer all weekend, alongside a community barbecue on opening day from 10am.
“We’re excited to welcome residents back to enjoy their newly renovated pool,” Doyle said.
“The improvements include new pool tiling, an all-accessibility hoist, comfortable seating and a state-of-the-art ventilation system for year-round comfort.”
Renovations will continue into 2025, with upgrades planned for the changing rooms, bathrooms and hallways.
