Hydro Tasmania has launched its 2026 Community Grants Program, offering Tasmanian organisations up to $5,000 to fund local projects.

The state-owned energy company is marking a decade of community support in this way, having given more than $450,000 to more than 90 organisations statewide since the program began.

“We are so pleased to offer funding to assist Tasmanian organisations working to make their communities a better place,” Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs Ruth Groom said.

The grants support projects across education, health, social justice, environment, animal welfare, arts, sports and recreation, and youth development.

Last year’s recipients included the Tasmanian Transport Museum, who are now asking for state government support to help with their growing numbers.

They received more than $4,000 for essential maintenance equipment and a storage shed.

Museum President Jeff Bronstein said the funding had been crucial for the not-for-profit organisation preserving Tasmania’s transport history.

“Previously, volunteers would often need to use their own equipment and vehicles to get jobs done,” Bronstein said.

“The grant supports our volunteers by providing them with the tools they need to work safely and effectively.”

The museum recorded its busiest January ever this year, welcoming more than 1,100 visitors.

Community groups can apply for funding to support local projects

“Visitors don’t just observe history at the museum – they experience it,” Bronstein said.

“People can ride the trains, step aboard the buses and really connect with Tasmania’s past.”
