More than $284,000 has been raised to support Tasmanian children with cancer through a new partnership between the state government and cricket legend Ricky Ponting’s foundation.
The funds were generated through the first-ever Ponting Foundation Hobart Hurricanes fundraising match played against the Sydney Sixers in January.
The charity match is now set to become an annual fixture in the Big Bash League calendar, with the second event scheduled for 14 January 2026 between the Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat.
A new formal agreement between the Ponting Foundation and the Tasmanian Government will ensure the money provides practical support to families dealing with childhood cancer diagnoses.

Health Minister Bridget Archer said the funds would make a significant difference to affected families.
“The funds raised will assist families right across Tasmania during the incredibly difficult experience of a childhood cancer diagnosis, helping with travel, treatment and appointments, while also enhancing services and contributing to cancer research,” Archer said.

The initiative aims to enhance Tasmanian paediatric oncology services to reduce the need for families to travel interstate for treatment, while also supporting cancer research.
Ponting Foundation co-founder and cricket great Ricky Ponting said he was proud of the inaugural event’s success.
“Rianna and I are proud to announce the second Ponting Foundation charity match will take place on 14 January next year, with the reigning champion Hobart Hurricanes taking on the Brisbane Heat,” Ponting said.
“I encourage everyone to get involved in the game and our broader fund raising program that will be announced next month.”
