A teenage driver caught hurtling down the Bass Highway at 33km/h over the speed limit with four young passengers in his car has been slapped with fines in excess of $600 and five demerit points.
The 19-year-old P-plater was pulled over by police near West Ulverstone around 4pm on Saturday.
Inspector Adam Spencer said the “inexperienced motorist” was putting not only his own life at risk, but also the lives of his passengers and other road users.
“Speeding is one of the fatal five causes of death and serious injury on our roads and novice drivers have been found to be over-represented in serious and fatal [crashes],” he said.
“Remember, high-range speeding will not be tolerated,” Spencer said.
“If you witness dangerous or hooning vehicles, please report to police to enable us to investigate promptly to remove unsafe drivers from our roads.”
