The Tasmania JackJumpers have bolstered their roster ahead of NBL26 with the signing of defensive specialist Ben Ayre on a multi-year contract.
The 29-year-old guard joins Tasmania on a two-year deal with a mutual option for the second season, following a stint with South East Melbourne Phoenix where he featured in 50 games over two seasons.
JackJumpers Chief Operating Officer Darren Smith said Ayre’s competitive nature aligns perfectly with the club’s identity.
“Ben’s energy and skillset are a perfect fit for our team’s culture, and we believe he will be a real asset both on and off the court,” Smith said.

“I think the Tassie fans will love his competitive spirit and tenacity, he wears his heart on his sleeve.”
Ayre, who is currently playing in Germany with EWE Baskets Oldenburg for the remainder of the BBL season, said he is excited about joining Tasmania’s defensive-minded system.

“I enjoy playing defence, don’t think many guys would say that. But that was one of the key drivers from both sides, the coaches and myself,” Ayre said.
“I pride myself on being a disruptor on the defensive end and I like to play fast and get guys involved.”
He highlighted team culture as a major factor in his decision to join the JackJumpers.
“What’s been really evident about the JackJumpers is everyone’s trying to help each other,” he said.

“I got great intel from speaking to guys that are in Tassie or have played there, that the main goal every day is to come in and uplift someone else rather than just always being about yourself.”
Ayre is expected to arrive in Tasmania later this year before the team begins its preseason preparations for the 2025-2026 NBL campaign.
