Master Builders Tasmania has appointed Jenna Cairney as its new Chief Executive Officer amid what the organisation describes as economic “headwinds” facing the state’s construction sector.
Cairney, who brings experience from roles including Deputy Secretary of Economic Development at the Department of State Growth and Director of Communications in the premier’s office, will officially begin on September 8.
MBT President Vonette Mead said Cairney would bring exceptional leadership to Tasmania’s building and construction sector.
“Jenna has a strong track-record in developing strategies and delivering outcomes in business, industry and skills across the highest levels of Government, bureaucracy and private sector,” Mead said.

“To have this wealth of experience in our CEO will set our industry up for success as we face the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
The appointment comes at a critical time for Tasmania’s construction industry, which employs more than 26,000 people across the state.

Cairney acknowledged the industry faces significant challenges including skills shortages, excessive regulation, rising construction costs and political uncertainty.
“When Tasmania’s construction sector coughs, the state’s economy catches a cold,” Cairney said.
“While we’ve enjoyed a purple-patch in recent years, the role of MBT in ensuring government stays on-track and its members are heard, is not just important, it’s essential.”
She said her initial focus would be meeting the MBT team and travelling throughout Tasmania to connect with members.

Cairney takes over from David Clerk, who stepped down from the top job in July to take on the role of CEO with Spectran Group.
