‘& Juliet’ musical brings pop hits to Hobart’s Theatre Royal

Tasmania is currently hosting one of its largest musical theatre productions, with & Juliet now lighting up Hobart’s Theatre Royal.

The pop-powered jukebox musical reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, asking what would happen if Juliet chose life instead of tragedy and set out to write her own story.

Producer and actor John Xintavelonis said the show offers something fresh for audiences.

Packed with hit songs made famous by artists including Britney Spears, Katy Perry and the Backstreet Boys, woven into Shakespeare’s narrative.

The production is proving to be a major event on Tasmania’s 2026 arts calendar.

“This hilarious new musical flips the script on one of the greatest love stories ever told,” he said.

“Juliet ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love, her way.”

“There is also a fabulous set and pyrotechnics.”

Xintavelonis described it as “larger than life” and promised it would “make you roar with laughter”.

The production comes from the same team behind Tasmania’s record-breaking run of The Rocky Horror Show.

& Juliet is now playing at the Theatre Royal until March 21.
