Northern Tasmania’s junior football competition will introduce Under 8s for the first time next year as part of an overhaul aimed at boosting participation.
The Northern Tasmania Junior Football Association (NTJFA) will launch the new age group in 2026, alongside 35 other changes recommended in a review with AFL Tasmania.
NTJFA president Josh Nast said clubs had embraced the changes.
“This has been an extremely exciting process to work through with our clubs and I’m so thankful for their buy-in and collegiate approach as we seize this generational opportunity for footy in our region,” he said.

“The introduction of Under 8s will spark significant growth in the region and the expansion of the girls’ pathway is another clear opportunity for us all to realise together.”
All clubs will be required to run NAB AFL Auskick centres, including all-girls programmes, the association said.

The review comes as Tasmania prepares for its AFL and AFLW teams, with the NTJFA looking to capitalise on renewed interest in the sport.
Member clubs endorsed 32 of the 36 recommendations at a recent forum, with most changes rolling out from 2026.
The girls’ Under 17 competition will shift to Under 16s from 2027, aligning with the NTFA’s introduction of an Under 18s competition.
The change aims to address a 50% drop-off rate between junior and senior football, according to the review.
Boys’ competitions will also see changes designed to reduce lopsided contests and avoid mid-season division reshuffles, the review recommends.
AFL Tasmania community football manager Tom Barwick said strong Auskick programmes and Under 8s in every club were important.
“The base of the pyramid is critical to making a step change for footy in northern Tasmania and that means strong Auskick programs and Under 8s in every club,” he said.
“This is footy heartland and the game will remain incredibly strong if we continue to prioritise the growth of the NTJFA and keep the focus on participation and fun.”
