Kayaker in distress winched from Hobart’s Derwent River

A kayaker has been rescued from the Derwent River off Hobart’s eastern shore after he found himself in distress in the water.

Police received reports of the incident between Old Beach and Claremont around 7:50pm on Thursday.

The man was reportedly in the water, wearing a floatation device and holding onto the hull of a kayak, police said.

Officers kept watch on the man from the shoreline while the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to the scene.

The kayaker was safely winched from the river and is now receiving medical treatment.
