KFC will return to Hobart’s CBD later this month, with an April 20 opening confirmed for its new inner-city site.

The new store at the intersection of Harrington and Patrick streets will operate for 12 hours each day, bringing the popular chain back to the city centre after a lengthy planning battle.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing our famous Kentucky Fried Chicken to Hobart, with the restaurant set to open its doors on the 20th of April,” a KFC spokesperson told Pulse.

“The restaurant will operate from 10am to 10pm every day and will create a number of new roles in the local community,” they said.

The announcement ends a years-long saga that saw the original proposal blocked by Hobart City Council in 2022 over traffic concerns and its proximity to nearby schools.

The developer successfully appealed the rejection to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, reaching an agreement with council in May that included conditions restricting lighting and operating hours.

The new restaurant will be the first KFC in Hobart since the Liverpool Street store closed years ago.

Currently, residents wanting their fried chicken fix must travel to suburbs like Kingston, Rosny or Glenorchy.

The drive-through restaurant represents a significant win for KFC fans who have long campaigned for the chain’s return to the city.
