Surf lifesavers at Kingston Beach carried out a “number of rescues” yesterday after a sudden change in weather made the ocean hazardous.
The Kingston Beach Surf Life Saving Club described the incident as a “timely reminder” of the importance of staying aware of changing water conditions.
“We know Kingston Beach can be calm and very inviting for a swim,” the club said on Monday evening.
“But today’s conditions proved the importance of checking the water before you enter and being aware of your own ability in changing conditions.”

The club commended its volunteers for their swift and skilled response to the “dramatically” shifting conditions.
“Your skill level and quick response made all the difference and we are truly grateful to have you volunteering your time to save lives.”

Reinforcing key water safety guidelines, the club urged swimmers to always stay between the flags and inform someone of their plans before entering the water.
The reminder follows a tragic drowning incident in December, when a recreational swimmer lost their life at Carlton Beach while attempting to rescue children caught in strong currents.
