Labor say they would double funding for before and after school care facilities if elected, promising to deliver at least 20 upgrades within two years.
The announcement comes as many Tasmanian parents struggle to find suitable care options that allow them to work full hours while ensuring their children are safely supervised – according to the opposition.
Labor leader Dean Winter said the initiative would address a critical gap in Tasmania’s childcare infrastructure.
“Tasmanian families are struggling with the cost of living and many parents are forced to give up extra hours at work because there simply isn’t before or after school care available near them,” Winter said.

The enhanced program would fast-track funding to upgrade or build new facilities across the state, focusing initially on priority locations while continuing work with 50 Tasmanian schools that have already indicated demand for such services.
Labor’s plan involves partnering with service providers to develop tailored solutions for each site, aiming to create environments that are not only safe but also offer educational and recreational value for primary school children.

The party claims the initiative would deliver multiple benefits beyond childcare alone.
“This is about giving children quality care, easing pressure on parents, and unlocking workforce participation. It’s good for families and good for the economy,” Winter said.
