Labor leader Dean Winter has pledged to keep the Hawthorn Football Club in Launceston for years to come, promising four AFL games each season under a new partnership deal.
“Labor premier Jim Bacon brought the Hawks to Launceston 24 years ago and it will be a Labor government that keeps them here,” Winter said.
The proposed deal would see the state government, Launceston City Council and the Hawks all working together under a three-way agreement.
Winter said the council has already endorsed the plan, which would lock in games at York Park until the end of 2032.

It comes after the Liberals announced at least six AFL games will be played at the stadium in 2028 and 2029.
“We know that supporters love going to games at York Park and we know that businesses across Launceston thrive when the Hawks are in town,” he said.

“But this partnership is about more than just football games.”
“Off the field, previous partnerships have made a meaningful impact in the wider Tasmanian community and we are committed to ensuring they continue and grow in the future.”
The new deal would continue Hawthorn’s community outreach programs right across Tasmania.
“We also recognise the cultural value of AFL to Tasmania. It’s part of our identity,” Winter added.
“Keeping elite-level games in Launceston ensures that regional fans continue to have direct access to top-tier Australian football, close to home.”
