A Labor candidate who narrowly missed out on a seat in the Tasmanian Parliament at the last election, has indicated his interest in participating in a recount.
That recount for Richard Goss could come if former Labor leader Rebecca White successfully transitions to federal politics.
White has been chosen as the Labor candidate for the federal seat of Lyons, currently held by Brian Mitchell, in the upcoming election.
Under Tasmania’s Hare-Clark electoral system, a recount is triggered if a parliamentary seat becomes vacant before the next scheduled election, allowing unsuccessful candidates from the same election to nominate for the process.
In the March state election, Goss received 5,905 votes, approximately 2,700 votes less than the quota required for the final seat in the Lyons electorate.
On social media following the state election loss, Goss said he was “genuinely thankful for the overwhelming support, relentless dedication and votes from people across the electorate”.
“My heartfelt gratitude goes out to the fellow candidates in Lyons and I commend Rebecca White for her outstanding leadership,” he wrote.
White responded by acknowledging Goss’s “excellent campaign”, saying it showed “just how well respected you are across the community”.
“Thank you for putting your hand up, I truly hope you have another go at the next election,” she wrote.
