Two men in a small dinghy were rescued overnight off the north-west coast after running into trouble while trying to return to shore.

The pair were about three kilometres north of the Western Inlet near Stanley when their 10-foot aluminium dinghy lost power.

Police said the men had set off from Anthony Beach in the Circular Head area but were unable to make it back due to strong winds.

A local fishing vessel rushed to their aid and safely brought the men and their boat back to Stanley Wharf.

Neither of them needed medical attention.

Police used the incident as a reminder for boaters to check their safety gear before heading out.

They said the latest information on “minimum safety requirements” can be found on the Marine and Safety Tasmania website.

“This comes as a timely reminder for any members of the public who undertake boating activities to check that the vessel and occupants have all the required safety equipment for safe boating,” police said.
