The Launceston Chamber of Commerce has formally called on Mayor Matthew Garwood to resign, citing “serious concerns” about his conduct and its impact on the city’s reputation.
In a letter sent to Garwood, Chamber president Damian Ivereigh described the mayor’s position as “untenable” following recent controversies.
“The mayor’s conduct has, at the very least, become a distraction from the business at hand. At worst, it signals a disregard for the core responsibilities of civic leadership,” Ivereigh said.
The call follows public backlash after Garwood posted a photo to social media with American musician Ronnie Radke at a concert meet and greet.

The controversy escalated last week when Radke shared offensive and threatening messages targeting specific councillors online, before Launceston City Council passed a vote of no confidence in the mayor.
The Chamber, which represents major local businesses including JMC, Boag’s, Launceston Airport and the University of Tasmania, said strong leadership was crucial as the city enters a key period of growth and opportunity.

“At a time when Launceston is seeking to attract new residents, businesses, and investment and as we enter a federal election period where strong local leadership is more important than ever, the city cannot afford leadership that undermines trust, unity and progress,” Ivereigh said.
While the Chamber has taken a strong stance, Garwood has also received an outpouring of support online.
A petition launched by local resident Claire Richardson, calling for the removal of councillors who supported the no-confidence motion, has attracted more than 4,400 signatures.
Following the vote, Garwood took to social media to share his frustration.

“I have learned, owned, apologised and taken responsibility for that… I’m not a politician, I’m a person. I see incredible potential and momentum in my hometown and have given it more than my all,” he said.
“Perhaps I’m the one with no confidence.”
Garwood said he and his wife Michelle would “take some time to discuss what we do next” as he considers his future.
